the waiting is a watching

The waiting is a watching.

Straining to see the stars amid smoke and fear; focused on the tiniest pinpricks of hope.

Do not desert us. Rescue us. Remember us.

The waiting is a watching.

Eyes peeled for a hint of morning.

Find us. Do not leave us. Remember us.

We watch from different places; some high on the wall, getting the best view of sunrise; others down beneath, struggling through the rubble.

For some their feet is on solid ground, so comfortable that they forget to watch, sometimes. Forget to wait.

For others the wait is fierce and desperate:

As the boat takes on more water.

As the way out is blocked.

As the guns are closing in.

As they are forsaken by all.

Help us. Please, don’t abandon us. Remember us.

Don’t mock our prayers; they are all we have. The stars are going out.

Come, o come, o please do come…

Emmanuel. Emmanuel. Emmanuel.

The waiting is a watching.
