Often I feel guilty, when in the midst of a writing project, that I don’t seem to be ‘doing a lot’. Particularly at the beginning. Particularly today, actually.

But a lot of writing is about observing. Allowing myself time to look.  To see the world around me, to notice what people are doing, to stare out of the window in order to think. To empty my mind and just be aware.

Because if I don’t take time to observe, I don’t discover.  And if I don’t discover, I don’t have much to write about.

Observing is not a waste of time. The thing that is waste of time is to feel guilty about it.

I need to observe in order to produce, in time, something else worth looking at, worth reading.

When I get stuck, perhaps a bit of observation is in order.
